• Casa Grande Elementary School District (CGESD) adheres to Arizona State Mandates outlined for gifted testing.  CGESD primarily uses the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)) to identify gifted students. The assessment battery includes tools that are language-free and culturally unbiased to provide equal opportunities for identification of the District’s English language learners and culturally diverse students:

    • Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)

Testing is offered three times each year as follows: (This information is subject to COVID-19 guidelines.)

    • Fall - grades 3 - 8 students who may qualify for WINGS or ePortfolio
    • Winter – 2nd Grade Screeners across the district
    • Spring - Any 3 - 8 student residing in the CGESD boundaries
    • (Additional testing consideration will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis as determined by the District Assessment & Gifted coordinator and support team members for applicable K-8 students)

Testing accommodations are made for students with disabilities according to each student's IEP or Section 504 Accommodation Plan. This testing may require special testing arrangements at the student’s home school site and will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

    Arizona State Approved Identifying Tests

CGESD Assessment & Gifted Coordinator and Gifted PLC Leaders are available to guide staff members and parents through the gifted testing nomination process at staff meetings and individual meetings via scheduled appointment. Parents, students, teachers, and school administrators may nominate students for gifted testing.  Parent notification and permission is required for individuals nominated for gifted testing.  Testing is usually the first Saturday of September (fall) and February (spring).  Parent recommendations for testing requests can be made through a verbal request to your child’s classroom teacher or to the Assessment and Gifted Coordinator.

Students qualify for gifted and talented services by scoring in the 90th percentile or above on anyone, or combination, of the verbal, quantitative, or nonverbal sections of a state approved test beginning in kindergarten. Students that score in the 90th percentile or above in one of the three areas on the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) are eligible for participation in our ePortfolio gifted programming, and/or with additional requirements met, students may be invited to join our WINGS gifted magnet program at Desert Willow Elementary. Please see the criteria for placement document attached below.

The CGESD Assessment and Gifted Coordinator will mail written notification of test results to parents and guardians within four - to - six weeks of test administration. Parent notification is provided in English and mailed to the address in PowerSchool.  Test results are available in Spanish for the CogAT upon request.

Parent notification of testing results includes:

    • Letter of CogAT results and placement options based on those results

Students not residing in the CGESD attendance boundary: At this time, CGESD is unable to provide gifted testing for students residing outside CGESD boundaries that do not attend one of our schools. Please contact your home school district for district testing information, or parents may choose to have their child tested privately.
