Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is a bachelor's degree required?
    No, however, it is advantageous to have prior work experience with students.


    Can I specify the days I am available?
    Yes, you will be asked about your availability during orientation.  Later, if your availability changes, you can notify the substitute coordinator of the changes.

    Can I only work at certain schools and/or grades?
    Yes, you will be asked for your preferences during orientation.  Changes can be made through the substitute coordinator.

    Will I be able to work 5 days a week?
    A substitute teacher is not a full-time position with the District.  Therefore, there is no guarantee of the number of days to be worked. 

    When will I get called for jobs?
    Most calls are made between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.  Using our automated system, Frontline Education, you will be able to review and accept jobs in advance.

    What is a substitute teacher’s work schedule?

    Elementary Schools:                7:30 a.m. — 3:15 p.m.
    Middle Schools:                       8:15 a.m. — 4:00 p.m.

    Will I need to write lesson plans?
    For day-to-day jobs, you will not be required to write lesson plans.  Teachers generally leave detailed lesson plans in the classroom.  You are expected to follow them to the best of your ability.   If you cannot locate the lesson plans, please advise the school principal and seek direction.  You may need to use a few 5- or 10- minute time filler activities on these days.

    For long-term assignments, you will be required to complete lesson plans. You will participate in grade level meetings where lesson plans are discussed/prepared and will attend school staff meetings and applicable parent-teacher conferences.

    Long-term pay begins after 20 consecutive days in the same classroom.

    *Note:  By limiting your available days, specifying certain schools and/or grades you will limit the number of substitute teaching opportunities.

    Long Term (Daily) - $135

    Emergency Substitute Teachers

    Daily - $100
    Long Term (Daily) - $120

     

    *Retired/Former certified teachers of the district receive $5 more per day.
